Evaluation FAQ

HELLO! THESE ARE SOME OF THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE PHHL EVALUATION PROCESS. THEY ARE IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER, BUT PLEASE SKIM THROUGH THESE PRIOR TO ASKING THE LEAGUE QUESTIONS. THERE ARE TONS OF GREAT QUESTIONS OUR LEAGUE PARTICIPANTS HAVE ASKED IN THE PAST AND HERE IS A HIGHLIGHT REEL OF THOSE QUESTIONS!!!

Should we attend both Evaluation Sessions?

Yes in order for us to get the most accurate evaluation on your player we would like players to be at both sessions.

Why is my evaluation not at the conference/rink I signed up for?

We group everyone in the age group based on last name and NOT conference for evaluations so players could be scheduled to go to any of our locations.

How many Advanced Teams will there be?

Great question. It is 100% dependent on how the talent in our league is distributed and we may not be able to answer for at least a week or so after evaluations

My Child played travel hockey last season. So that means they will be placed on an advanced team, correct?

Incorrect. Children progress at different paces in life and sport. It would be unfair to automatically award a roster spot to someone based on where they have been, rather than the content of their most recent efforts. This does not mean we do not take into account their latest coaches recommendations and rankings.

I have not received an evaluation schedule, did i fall through the cracks????

You probably did not fall through the cracks. Please check your spam folder, junk folder, and your deleted folder. HOWEVER, if you do not see an update there, please note that we essentially DO NOT finalize the evaluation schedule until registration is closed. This means that if we notify you that registration is closed at 5pm Wednesday,  you will hear shortly from us AFTER that with evaluation schedules. Typically within 24/48 hours of closing of registration. Evaluation scheduling, if possible, should be handled LOOSELY! If we are evaluating a specific weekend, then please keep commitments to a minimum regarding your child that weekend since we ourselves can not guarantee a time until we know our participation level. We apologize in advance!

IF MY CHILD IS A GOALIE (10U-18U) IS IT THE SAME EVALUATION PROCESS AS A PLAYER?

Yes goalies will take place in the same scrimmages as the players. We will have a max of 4 goalies in each scrimmage. They will rotate throughout the scrimmage to ensure equal playing time.  We may run into a situation where we ask a goalie to stay for multiple evaluation sessions or change their evaluation time based on needs for each age group.

I received my evaluation times, can I adjust them?

Due to the complexity of coordinating 1000+ players per season, the answer is no. We have had extenuating circumstances that have qualified for an adjustment, but those situations were brought to our attention well before evaluation weekend.

Do We have to come to evaluations? We have (Unspecified reason) and can not make it.

No, you do not need to come to evaluations. This does pose a problem though, and can cause your child to be placed inaccurately. Regardless of previous coach evaluations provided. PHHL is open to all players who want to play, but those who do not engage in the evaluation process may end up where they do not exactly belong for the season that follows.

We do not have the current jerseys yet, can my kid still evaluate?

Absolutely. We will have pennies available for evaluations, but since you need league jerseys to participate in our league, please make every reasonable attempt to have those jerseys PRIOR to evaluations. We will always provide a link for purchase, but this will be sent out to the league registration as soon as Pure Hockey provides.

What are Pennies???

Pennies are mini-jerseys that go over whatever your kid is wearing. As long as your child has a jersey, a pennie solves everything, for evaluation purposes.

This is our first evaluation, what does it look like!?

8U/6U - You will need to arrive with minimum 20-25 minutes prior to ice session and your kid should be prepared to enter the ice 10 minutes prior to ice session.  You will also ALWAYS sign in prior to  your child getting on the ice. This allows the evaluators to know who they are evaluating.  Give your child their own water bottle to bring on the ice to a bench. The evaluation is a closely watched half-ice scrimmage, where we score the kids on how they compete with their fellow players.

10U and Up - Arrive 20 minutes prior to scheduled ice time and be prepared to be on the ice 10 minutes prior to schedule. We will provide pennie at sign-up unless otherwise noted. They need to sign in so evaluators know you are present. Give your child their own water bottle to bring on the ice to a bench. The evaluation is a closely watched full-ice scrimmage, where we score the kids on how they compete with their fellow players.

What team is my child on/Who is my child's coach?

Depends on when you are asking, we will not communicate to you what team you play on. That is your new team's head coach responsibility. We will support your team's coach to get that message out! Families need to allow us a week or so of time to draft teams and coaches in an appropriate manner prior to help notifying league participants.

Can I see my child's evaluation results?

Unfortunately not, these are kept confidential and are only a piece of the metric considered when determining placement.
